Does Your Faith Define Who You Are?

When the subject of God comes up in a conversation, many times people say that they are “spiritual” or that they have “faith.”  However, can that faith be observed as their lives are examined by others?  Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Your actions are so loud I can’t hear what you are saying.”  Emerson is saying that a person’s actions are what really define him or her—rather than the person’s words.

Likewise, the Bible tells us, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21).  Does your faith—whether actual or theoretical—follow you through the door into your work, into your private home life, and into your relationships?  It is a strange dichotomy that so often what someone says about personal spirituality or faith is no where to be seen in that person’s daily life.

In his Farewell Address, September 19, 1796, President George Washington said, “Of all the dispositions and habits that lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports…And let us indulge with caution the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion.”  A study of Washington’s character in his official capacity as President and in his personal life confirms that his actions were the manifestations of his strong Christian faith.

Many years from now could someone write of you that your actions in life were manifestations of your faith?  Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)  If you truly believe that statement from our faith’s Commander-in-Chief, then today in your job and in your relationships, let your faith be evident for all to see!
