Thanksgiving and Prayer
Wouldn’t it be thrilling if our representatives and leaders in Congress, in the White House, and in the Federal Judiciary would stop to pray when an impasse occurs in the process of considering important decisions? Imagine if men and women of good will would stop to pray to the Creator of our inalienable rights before, during, and after each meeting of the Congress when legislation is being proposed and formulated!
What blessings might there be for our country if our elected representatives had such a reverential respect for, as George Washington said in his first Inaugural Address, “…that Almighty Being who rules over the universe, who presides in the councils of nations and whose providential aids can supply every human defect.”
During the difficult early years of the founding of our Republic, history records how often the first order of business was to pray and offer thanksgiving. In Gary DeMar’s book, America’s Christian Heritage, he documents the many times our founding fathers called for prayer, fasting, and thanksgiving.
The apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious for anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” As we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, let us pray that this blessing of peace may find its way into the White House, the Supreme Court, the halls of Congress, and every State House. Psalms 32:12 reminds us, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”
